Dr. Protasio Ferreira e Castro is currently Dean in Post-Graduation and Research at UNIGRANRIO –University of Greater Rio “Prof. José de Souza Herdy” – in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil . Full Professor Construction Technology (1994) of Fluminense Federal University (UFF), graduated in Civil Engineering from the Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ) in 1971 and obtained the Master Degree in Civil Engineering from UFF in 1981. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from University of London (1985), with a thesis in Non-Destructive Tests for Concrete Structures, developed equipment that obtained a patent for CNPq/University College London. Achieved a Post-doctorate at the University of Delaware (1994), was a visiting professor of West Virginia University (1995) and visiting researcher of the National Institute of Standard and Technology (1996), in the United States of America (USA). Professor Dr. Protasio Castro received the awards “Gilberto Molinari” from the Brazilian Concrete Institute (1998), “Pontes Corrêia” (1986) from the Brazilian Paving Association and the Ordem do Mérito Aeronáutico (2004) from the Brazilian Air-Force. He was a member of the teaching staff of UFRJ from 1973 to 1994. Besides being a teacher of UFF since 1994, he held the position of vice-chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering (1998-2000), was coordinator of the Research and Post-Graduation Program and took office as President of the Selection Commission for Masters and Doctorates in Civil Engineering Program (2000-2003). Advised on master dissertations and doctoral theses, participated in the exam banks of doctoral theses, master’s dissertations and public entrance exams: for university professors, for municipal engineers for the State of Rio de Janeiro and personnel selection in companies. Has innumerous papers published in periodicals and presented at national and international events. Professor Protasio Castro is also a member of technical committee of national and international periodicals. Participated in organization and scientific committees of national and international congresses and was an invited lecturer in congresses carried out in Brazil and abroad. During the period 1992-1994 was president of the Building Materials Professors Committee (COPMAT), a national entity. Currently develops research in the areas of engineering and architecture about: the use and application of urban solid residuals in the construction industry, with the development of eco-efficient and social insertion production lines; post-occupation client satisfaction evaluation; construction control by means of non-destructive tests and the development and performance of alternative products and materials. In the area of the knowledge of teaching-learning, he developed researches on the Teaching of Science in Basic Education. In 1997, he took the course in High Political and Strategic Studies at the Defense College (ESG), when he presented his monograph on University-Industry interaction. In 1998 and 1999 acted as an expert for the studies in Political Foresight Scenarios for Science and Technology, at the High Political and Strategic Studies course of ESG. He is an "Adhoc" consultant of CNPq, da CAPES, of FAPERJ and FUNADESP, besides being a researcher at CNPq. In these conditions, evaluated research projects for agencies and Brazilian, American and Czech universities, he also acted as an external member of the Evaluation Committee of the Scientific Research Initiation Program of Brazilian universities. Dr. Castro is an evaluator of institutions and university courses of the Ministry of Education. He was an Engineer at Brazilian Federal Highway Department (1974-1988), where he was in charge of the Road Research Centre of the Road Research Institute. He currently performs professional activities in engineering, consulting and technical inspections for AEFE – Association of Former Alumni of Fluminense Engineering School and for FEC – Euclídes da Cunha Foundation. Under these conditions, he carried out evaluations and technical reports, surveys of existing conditions, verification of the technical viability, case studies relating to the Customer Code and the elaboration of public edicts. He was Vice Chair of SHEWC’2008 (Safety. Health and Environmental World Congress), SHEWC’2009 and SHEWC’2010.
